Cell Phones and Batteries
Visit the Municipal Center, any Oak Lawn Park District facility, or the Oak Lawn Public Library to drop off your old, outdated or broken phones to be sent to “Cell Phones for Soldiers.” For more information, please go to: www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com
Additionally, we are collecting single-use and rechargeable batteries. Look for our battery collection tubes at the Village Hall, Metra Train Station, Library, & Park District Facilities.
The Village of Oak Lawn has adopted a new policy concerning battery recycling.
- Rechargeable batteries can be dropped off at our E Waste site located at 5550 W. 98th Street during our hours of operation-Tuesday thru Thursday between the hours of 2 PM and 4 PM, and the second Saturday of the month between 10 AM and 12 Noon.
- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recommends disposing of alkaline batteries with regular household trash.
- Alkaline batteries contain no hazardous waste and little recyclable materials. Previous environmental hazards associated with alkaline batteries were due to their mercury content. The federal Battery Management Act of 1996 phased-out the use of mercury in alkaline batteries and today few, if any, alkaline batteries contain mercury.
- There will be some examples of rechargeable and/or heavy metal batteries that should be recycled in a display case.
