|Frequently Asked Questions
What is the status of the 111th and Cicero TIF ( Tax Increment Financing District) ? KMART filed a lawsuit against the Village shortly after Board of Trustees approval. The lawsuit contends the site is not blighted and KMART is challenging the findings of a report by Kane, McKenna and Associates, the firm hired by the Village. New Village Manager Larry Deetjen oversaw the successful TIF that transformed the Grand Haven, Michigan waterfront during the 1980s and the award-winning oceanfront in Deerfield Beach during the late 1990s and turn of the century. Since arriving in August 2007, he has sought to encourage interest and eventual private investment in the site with linkage to the wonderful Stony Creek walkway and wildlife preserve. The Village Manager is excited about the level of interest and seeks private developers who will commit to quality and the creation of a special ambiance for Oak Lawn with its rich heritage and family tradition. Deetjen is hopeful that KMART will soon exhibit a spirit of cooperation rather than litigation that he has identified as a key trait that successful retailers in America exhibit.

In Oak Lawn am I responsible for removing snow and ice from the public walkway on my property?
Businesses are responsible by ordinance under a new local law recently passed. The Village is urging voluntary compliance to begin with and has encouraged Chamber of Commerce members to lead by example. Residents are also encouraged to maintain public walkways on their property for school children and for courtesy of neighbors.
I have noticed bare pavements due to salting and plowing on major thoroughfares in Oak Lawn and on snow routes but not residential streets. Why?
Many Chicago metropolitan communities like Oak Lawn have used to date more salt than they did all last season. Salt suppliers are behind close to two weeks and the supply is limited due to frozen rivers and ice on the Great lakes making navigation for transporting vessels difficult and slow. Oak Lawn plows and salts with a commitment to provide safe roadways but must conserve salt for emergencies. "Residential streets will receive less salt than in the past but the Village will continue its deicing activities on main arterial roadways, snow routes, and intersections." Drivers as always are urged to be cognizant of weather and road conditions and allow for more travel time during winter snow and ice events.
Roads seem to have more potholes and what is the Village doing about such terrible conditions?
Frequent freeze and thaw conditions this winter season have played havoc with road maintenance. Our Public Works crews are filling potholes with a " cold asphalt" mix weekly to temporarily address the poor road conditions. The Board of Trustees have recently approved a new 3 year plan for street repaving in Oak Lawn that DOUBLES last year's budget and bids for an early summer construction program are being planned.
