Mud Jacking

The Village of Oak Lawn offers mud jacking as an alternative to sidewalk removal and replacement.

What Is Mud Jacking ?
Mud jacking or slab jacking is a controlled lift of sunken sidewalk squares or concrete slabs. Concrete is hydraulically pumped underneath the affected area through carefully drilled holes. The pumped concrete fills the voids that are present underground which then causes the sidewalk or slab to lift. The sidewalk is also cut with a saw to prevent breakage.

What is the cost to have my sidewalk mud jacked?
There is no charge for this service. The Village will come out and inspect your sidewalks to ensure that they are a good candidate for this process.

When can I expect work to be completed?
After the initial inspection, the work will be scheduled to take place. While every attempt is made to complete the work in a timely and professional manner; there can be occasions where work does not begin immediately.

How can I get this process started?
You can request an inspection by calling the Department of Public Works @ 708-499-7756.

My sidewalk is not a good candidate for this process. What can I do?
Your name, address, and phone number will be forwarded to the Department of Quality Control for possible inclusion in the 50/50 program.

What do you do with the drilled holes after the work Is completed?
The holes are cleaned out and filled with a concrete mix that over time will blend in with the existing sidewalk.

My driveway apron is sinking. Can this be mud jacked? If; after inspection, the apron has been determined to be a good candidate for this process, it will be added to the list for work to begin. However; in the event that the apron cracks or fails, the Village will not repair or replace the apron. The apron is the responsibility of the homeowner.

The sidewalk broke from the mud jacking work. What will happen?
The Village will repair or replace any damaged sidewalk squares that may have been broken by this process if warranted. This determination is made by the Crew Chief from the Street Division in charge of the mud jacking program.

I would prefer to have my walks removed and replaced. What should I do?
You can contact the Department of Quality Control for possible inclusion in the 50/50 program @ 708-499-7818.

What is the 50/50 program?
The 50/50 program is a shared cost program through which the Village and the residents share the cost of removal and replacement of sidewalks in front of their home.
